The series ‘Alone’ began due to the mental health struggles that I was facing during the time of self-quarantine as we stepped into almost a month in April 2020. I would often experience the atmosphere in my home as a dark cloud that included fear, sadness, loss, grief, depression, anxiety, and uncertainty.
As Rainer Maria Rilke says, “But your solitude will be a support and a home for you, even in the midst of very unfamiliar circumstances, and from it you will find all your paths.” This series, as an artist – is my cry to society. During the time of self-isolation, I had combined my precious 35mm film negatives with the trees I captured during a recent trip to create photographic poems that are searching for inner truths, photographs being both beautiful and haunting as I explore different themes. I have digitally manipulated them in multiple exposure, solarization and reconstructed together as new photographs. These photographs have harmonized tragedy and beauty in them which helps to unfold – obscuring and revealing in layers, creating that push and pull for the viewer. In the photographs, the viewers see anger, confusion and struggle along with beauty and tenderness. This duality has influenced this body of work and I aim to evoke strong emotions and develop deep connections.
I have been able to discover the immense abilities we humans possess to cope with trauma, the strength that evolves out of suffering, and our common desire for healing and wholeness. We currently have no other choice than to just keep going.
